You Cannot Build a Website in a Day

As a web design company Path and Compass has had our fair share of interesting requests. One of which is how quickly can we design a website. Or more specifically, can we build a website in a day? This request stems from marketing ads run by popular website builders, like Squarespace and Wix, which promise businesses that they can have a custom website up and running in as little as a day. The problem is that while you can have a beautiful website, you probably won’t have an effective one! Leaving lots of small businesses wondering why their visually beautiful website isn’t working as well as they want or expected. Keep reading to learn why you cannot build a website in a day. And why investing in a custom website is worthwhile when you want to successfully grow your business!

Pretty Does Not Equate to Performance

Despite what the commercials may say, an effective & thoughtful website takes time. (And a lot more than $300). There is a much longer list of tasks to take care of to optimize your website’s design. Including determining your vision and crafting on-brand messaging. Setting goals and establishing a well-thought-out funnel that will convert. While website builders can guide you through DIYing a relatively pretty website (assuming you have all the images and copy ready to upload into their template), they often don’t guide you through these other elements.  A website that is effective requires much more thought – and time to actually work. That is why we have a whole team of skilled professionals – designers, copywriters, strategists – to create holistic web designs.

Lack of Experience & Support

Another factor to consider is your skills. How confident are you in dealing with tech issues? Are you a wiz at resizing images and optimizing SEO? Is your vision super clear and easily communicated in your copy? Do you know how to choose colors, fonts, and images that will work well together and connect with your ideal clients? Do you even want to know how to do any of this?? Website builders can make all of this seem easy. And there are tons of free tools out there! But your lack of familiarity can make DIYing a website super frustrating.

In order to have an effective website, you need to understand and be able to manage the backend. Like ensuring your DNS is correct, that SEO is in place, that your website is responsive, and that it is indexed with Google. And should you have issues achieving this, you are often sent to a link with step-by-step directions (not a human). While some people can manage this, we find the majority will invest a lot of their precious time and energy into a website only to hit a roadblock and leave it to die.

As a web design company, we have the knowledge to take care of the backend entirely. We know how to build a cohesive brand that speaks to your vision and audience. We are pros at crafting copy that does the same. Consider building your own website like building your own house (which also does not happen in one day). While it is less expensive to do it yourself, to do it well you need more time (and patience) to hone your skills.

Businesses Evolve – Can Your Website?

Too many business owners forget that their business is ever-changing. Every year you are eliminating what isn’t working and adding new services or products that will help you grow. As with all your marketing, your website should adjust accordingly. Unfortunately, websites built in a day don’t typically have the capabilities for updates. Instead, it will have to be rebuilt from scratch. Otherwise, you will be left with a website that is Frankensteined in appearance, outdated, and no longer serves your business or business goals. When you work with a thoughtful website design agency, like Path and Compass, we consider all your future goals and paths. Then build a more solid and flexible foundation so your website can adapt to support you both in the present and in the future.

At Path & Compass, our mission is to help you create a website that aligns with your brand and helps you achieve your business goals. As a team of visionary creatives and professional designers, we’re helping businesses of every kind stand out in overcrowded markets.
