20 Aug AI in Event Marketing: What’s Hype and What’s Actually Helpful for Small Businesses
AI tools are everywhere right now, offering to automate tasks, boost engagement, and take work off your plate. But for small businesses in the event industry, it’s easy to wonder—what’s actually helpful and what’s just hype? The goal isn’t to make your marketing robotic. It’s to find smart, time-saving tools that help you stay current and creative in a fast-moving landscape.
In this blog, we’ll unpack what AI can realistically help with today, which trends are more hype than help, and how Path & Compass can serve as your guide in choosing smart, strategic tools to support your sales and marketing.
First, What Do We Mean by AI?
Artificial intelligence (AI) refers to software that mimics human intelligence, such as learning from patterns, generating content, or offering suggestions based on your data. It shows up in a lot of everyday tools, from predictive text in emails to image tagging in photo libraries.
In the world of event marketing, it might look like:
- Generating social media content ideas
- Suggesting email subject lines likely to get opened
- Providing summaries of what types of content perform best
But it can also show up in more subtle, behind-the-scenes ways. That’s where things start to get interesting.
How Path & Compass Can Help You Use AI Thoughtfully
Before we dive into how AI can support your marketing, it’s worth noting that we never upload private client information into AI tools—and we strongly recommend you don’t either. Protecting sensitive customer data is always a top priority.
We know AI can feel like a big unknown. We’re not here to hand it all over to the machines. At Path & Compass, we use AI tools as a support system, not a substitute. You’ll never get one-size-fits-all automation from us. Instead, we look for ways to integrate the helpful parts of AI into your existing strategy—always with your voice, your values, and your goals at the center.
Here are a few ways we can help you use AI tools effectively and with intention:
1. Bouncing Around Ideas for Campaigns
One of the most approachable uses for AI is brainstorming. When exploring new campaign ideas, trying to solve a messaging challenge, or thinking through seasonal promotions, ChatGPT can help spark ideas and offer suggestions. It doesn’t replace creative thinking. It simply gives you more starting points to work with – especially those around trending keywords. We like to treat AI like a brainstorming partner, helping us consider angles or phrasing we might not have thought of on our own. Once you’ve got your new ideas, you can shape and refine them into something that truly fits your brand & target audiences.
2. Supporting Customer Communication with Chatbots
We can help you integrate simple, on-brand chat tools that answer basic questions, capture leads, or point clients in the right direction, even when you’re away from your desk. When used well, these tools supplement your service without replacing the personal touch that sets your business apart.
3. Improving Timing and Engagement
We work with email and ad platforms that use AI to suggest the best times to send content or which subject lines might perform better. These insights help improve open rates and visibility—but we still choose what aligns best with your audience.
You get the benefit of smart technology without losing the thoughtful strategy behind every campaign.
4. Simplifying Review Requests and Reputation Management
AI-powered platforms can help automate the process of asking for client reviews, sending reminders, and collecting testimonials—all while keeping things personal and on-brand. It can also help craft a professional response to client complaints or negative reviews. We can help you set up these systems so they work behind the scenes to grow your reputation without adding to your workload.
5. Catching Errors Before They Go Live
Tools like Grammarly use AI to flag spelling mistakes, grammar issues, or awkward phrasing. We regularly use these tools to give content a second pass. It’s not a replacement for editing, but a safety net to make sure everything looks polished before it goes live.
6. Take Notes During Your Team Meetings
Ever get so caught up in taking notes during a meeting that you miss something important? Tools like Fathom take notes for you, so you can stay present and actually participate. Even better, it can send out a recap email after the meeting, saving you the time (and mental energy) of relaying everything to coworkers who couldn’t attend.

What We’re Not Buying Into
AI isn’t a silver bullet. Plenty of tools sound impressive but offer little return for the effort or expense. Here are a few things we don’t recommend investing time or money into (at least for now):
Overhyped Chatbots
For businesses in the event world, client relationships matter. While a chatbot can be handy for answering basic FAQs, it doesn’t replace the warmth and clarity that comes from a real human conversation. We believe your website should make it easy to connect with you, not just a script.
All-in-One “Event Planning AI” Tools
There are tools out there claiming to build your entire event plan from scratch using AI. In our experience, they’re either too generic or too clunky to work in the real world. Your business isn’t one-size-fits-all and clients still need your personal creativity and expertise for their event.
Expensive, Overcomplicated Platforms
We keep an eye out for tools that offer big benefits without big price tags. Just because something is labeled “AI” doesn’t mean it’s worth the investment. We vet platforms for value, simplicity, and real results that align with where your business is now and how much you want to grow.
Image Generation (At Least, Not Quite Yet)
We aren’t recommending image generation to our clients right now. Why? Because it’s really hard and time-consuming to get it right. Sure, you can probably generate a seemingly fine image on ChatGPT or Midjourney of a wedding reception full of beautiful Chiavari chairs and vibrant linens, but what happens when you zoom in? Often times, we see missing table legs, wonky flatware placements, and distorted glasses. In industries where aesthetics and details matter (like events, interiors, or anything visual), those imperfections stand out fast. But these tools are progressing quickly, so we may change our tune soon!
On the other hand, Photoshop’s generative fill features are very helpful for making small adjustments to existing images. If you feel comfortable using that, go for it.
So, Should You Care About AI?
Yes! AI is the future, and your business should aim to stay ahead of the curve. To do that well, it helps to have the right guide. AI can support your marketing in small, meaningful ways when used thoughtfully. It can:
- Help you brainstorm more confidently
- Support the backend of your reputation-building
- Free up time to focus more on connection and creativity
But the real value doesn’t come from the tools themselves. It comes from how we use them: strategically, responsibly, and with your goals in mind.
If you’ve been feeling unsure, behind, or overwhelmed by AI, you’re not alone. You don’t need to be an expert, and you don’t need to jump into every new trend. Let Path & Compass help you understand what’s worth exploring and what you can ignore. Request a marketing audit with us, and we’ll guide you through what’s helpful, what’s not, and how to move forward with clarity and confidence. At Path & Compass, we’re not here to chase tech trends or hand off your brand to a robot. We’re here to guide you toward growth that feels aligned, intentional, and future-proof.
