Actionable Principles to Lead Yourself and Others Right Now

Wow, what a few days. All the feelings right now. It has been hard to know what is the right thing to do now or in the coming days. What’s the right step in my business, with my team or in my personal life? How can I possibly know what to prepare for when the future is so uncertain? It’s been easy to spin up into things and feel overwhelmed and scared.

My coach, Michael Brody-Waite‘s actionable principles to lead yourself and others right now have been helping me immensely and I wanted to share them with you. This is a system for how to deal with overwhelming challenges and lead, based on his recovery from addiction. Note that all of these principles have a verb and are an immediate action you can take for anything you are struggling with.

1. Practice Rigorous Authenticity.

Be honest. Take the mask off and stop pretending everything is business as usual – with yourself, your team, your family. We don’t need to create panic but we do need to be honest about our feelings, our fears, and our reality so we can come up with the best solutions moving forward. A good way to get to the root fear or feeling is to keep asking “What then?” or “Why” at least 5 times when you find yourself stuck.

2. Surrender the Outcome.

There is SO much out of our control right now. And it is important to let that go, let go of your plans, your goals, surrender the outcome. Instead, make a list of what you can control related to your authentic fears/feelings and what you can’t. Grieve what you can’t, be angry, be sad – feel the feelings. BUT ultimately let go of controlling the outcome, what you had planned for the immediate future and focus on what you can control now.

3. Do uncomfortable work.

Lean in. Have tough conversations with your team, your clients, your family, yourself. Speak to your unique idea or solution. Say no when you need to. Ask for help. It is more important now than ever that we all do the work that we most fear. Growth and forward progress only happen when there is discomfort.

To all of you leaning in, I commend you and thank you. YOU are the leaders we need now and will need in the coming weeks and months. Should you want to dig into these principles more, Michael has graciously decided to release his book that was scheduled to come out in May, giving people early access to these principles and tools they need right now to lead others through this.
